Agricultural Universities



India is known for its agriculture background where 60% of the population is engaged in agricultural related activities. Agricultural universities are set up in India for the advancement of agriculture field through its research and development. There are 47 agricultural universities in India, including 5 deemed agricultural universities and 2 central agricultural universities. Some agriculture colleges are independent agriculture colleges affiliated to agricultural universities and some are part of universities and operate as school or faculty. Indian Council of agricultural research (ICAR) is an organization in New Delhi, under the Government of India for coordinating, guiding and managing research and education in agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and animal sciences in India. There are 90 ICAR institutes and 45 agricultural universities in India. ICAR has played a vital role in bringing up green revolution and developments in agriculture through its research and technology, enabling increase of production of food grains since 1950-51. ICAR conducts entrance exam for 
undergraduate courses in agriculture in agricultural universities of India.

Agricultural Education is one of the divisions of ICAR which is responsible for planning, development, coordination and quality assurance in higher agricultural education in the country. Maintaining and upgrading quality of higher agricultural education through partnership and efforts of the of the ICAR-Agricultural Universities (AUs) ,System comprising State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), Deemed to be universities (DUs), Central Agricultural University (CAU) and Central Universities (CUs) with Agriculture Faculty. This Division has a National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) at Hyderabad for facilitating capacity building of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) in research and education policy, planning and management and a National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research. The head of the division is Deputy Director General (Education) having three sections Human Resource Development, Education Planning and Development and Educational Quality Assurance and Reforms, each headed by an Assistant Director General (ADG).

Agricultural universities in India promote higher agricultural education among developing countries by providing opportunities to foreign students. 12 international hostels have been provided for the education of foreign students in agricultural universities. ICAR provide financial and professional support to state agricultural universities (SAUs), central universities (CUs), deemed universities (DUs) for modernization of academic facilities, infrastructure and improvement of faculty. There are about 200 units for experiential learning established in all agricultural universities for providing skill oriented hands-on training to the students.
