Engineering Management

Engineering Management is an elaborate form of management that is required for various applications in engineering due to unusual and technical behavior of engineering. Engineering Management can be either functional management or project management. Personnel in Engineering Management normally require training and experience in both general management and the specific engineering subject field.

Engineering Management programs include subjects in accounting, economics, finance, human resources management, industrial psychology, management information systems, mathematical modeling and optimization, quality control, operations research, safety and health issues, and environmental management. Engineering management concern with functional management or role management of technical professionals. Engineering field where engineering management applicable are product development, manufacturing, construction, design engineering, industrial engineering, technology, production, or  other personnel engaged in engineering field.

Engineering managers generally manage those engineers who are of non-enterprise thinking, and therefore require the people with skills to coach, mentor and motivate technical personnel.

Engineering professionals in manufacturing companies become engineering managers after certain time period. Graduates in Business Management joining manufacturing companies prefer positions of Team Leader in IT, marketing, strategy etc. Some institutes in both developing and developed economies are now providing post graduate degree in engineering management, making students understand the requirements of applying leadership capabilities and management knowledge in the technical and engineering field.

There are a number of organizations committed to the field of engineering management. IEEE is one of the largest organizations for the field of Engineering Management. This organization publishes a trade magazine on engineering management. American Society of Engineering Management is another biggest organization for engineering management, founded in 1979 by a group of 20 engineering managers.

The Master of Engineering Management Programs Consortium is an association of salient universities with the aim to raise the value of the Master of Engineering Management degree. The Engineering Management Certification International (EMCI), is a part of American Society of Mechanical Engineers, render a complete guide on Engineering Management, known as EMC-BOK Guide. EMCI provides two levels Certification for Engineering Management that is EMCF (Engineering Management Certification Fundamentals) and EMCP (Engineering Management Certification Professional). Engineering management university programs are most probably accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) or ATMAE (Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering).

Requirement to enter in to engineering management is engineering degree or other degree in computer science, mathematics or science and a business degree. Or it can be Bachelors of Engineering and Bachelors of Law, 6 year integrated degree, Bachelors of Engineering and Bachelors of Commerce, 6 year integrated degree, Bachelors of Engineering with Bachelors of Law and Bachelors of Commerce, 8 year integrated degree, Bachelors of Engineering followed by a Masters of Business Administration, 7 year integrated degree, Bachelors of Engineering followed by a Master of Engineering Management, technical-based substitute to MBA
