Universities in India


India is one of the largest educations providing country in the world and to serve the purpose of education there are number of universities for full time regular courses, distance learning courses, online education, and part time courses.

There are several statutory organizations that direct and run different universities in India. University Grants Commission of India that involved in giving support to the government recognized universities and colleges with funds. University Grants Commission (UGC) is one of such legal organization established by central government in 1956, for the coordination, determination and sustainment of standards of education in university. It provides funds for government recognized universities and colleges. Its headquarters is in New Delhi and six regional centres in Pune, Bhopal, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Guwahati and Bangalore. There are 15 institutions set up by UGC to see the accreditation or certification for higher education comprising of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) provide approval for engineering colleges to support technical education in India, Distance Education Council (DEC) is responsible for the promotion determination, coordination and maintenance of standards of the open university and distance education system, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) it has played an important role in bringing Green Revolution and developments in agriculture in India with its research and technology development, Bar Council of India (BCI) it impose standards of professional conduct for legal education and grants recognition to Universities which provide the degree of advocate, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) overlook standards, functions and operations in the system of Indian education, Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) run training programs and courses for disabled and underprivileged, Medical Council of India (MCI) maintain high standard of medical education in India, Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) maintain high standards for fair practice of pharmacy, Indian Nursing Council (INC) regulates the education in nursing, Dental Council of India (DCI) regulate the dental education, Central Council of Homoeopathy (CCH) regulate all the homeopathic medicine education in India, Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) regulate the education in medicine including Ayurveda, siddha, unani, Rehabilitation Council, National Council for Rural Institutes, State Councils of Higher Education, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is another council offers recognition and accreditation to universities.

In India universities are recognized in the following categories like central universities, state universities, deemed universities, private universities, agricultural universities, open universities.
Central universities are established by the central government or the government of India and funded by the organization of central government i.e. UGC; however the state universities are established by state government and UGC make budgetary plan allocation for state universities. Deemed Universities which are not universities, but recognized for excellence in education, granted the status of the university. Such institutions are known as deemed university. Deemed university is a status of autonomy granted to various universities in India. The status of deemed university is granted by central government or government of India, on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India, under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, after meeting all the standards set by UGC. Deemed-to-be” university An institution apply for the status of “Deemed university” to the central government, after meeting all the standards set by UGC(University Grants Commission) it will be granted the status of deemed university by the central government. Agricultural universities are set up in India for the advancement of agriculture field through its research and development. There are 47 agricultural universities in India, including 5 deemed agricultural universities and 2 central agricultural universities. Some agriculture colleges are independent agriculture colleges affiliated to agricultural universities and some are part of universities and operate as school or faculty. Open universities in India are the distance learning and research universities. Open universities provide education to the students wishing to pursue higher education on the basis of part-time or the people with health disabilities. Open universities in India are governed by DEC. DEC (Distance Education Council) is an organization in New Delhi. DEC is responsible for promotion, coordination and determination of standards of open universities or the distance education in India. There are many open universities in India.
